Georgian watercolour by Albin R Burt 1783-1842
£295.00
A fine watercolour depicting Sigismunda weeping over the heart of Guiscardo from The Decameron, by the artist Albin R Burt 1783-1842. The scene is worked in minute detail and of stunning quality. The painting is in good condition with just the usual minor fading with time. It is signed to the right ‘A R Burt’. Albin Roberts Burt was born in 1783 the son of Harry Burt and Mary (nee Roberts). His brother was secretary to Lord Nelson and his mother was an intimate of Emma Hamilton. He trained as an engraver under Robert Threw and Benjamin Smith but later turned to portraiture. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1807-1830 while living in London but he worked as an itinerant portrait painter travelling around the whole country. This work is interesting for the artist and was inspired by a painting of Hogarth’s completed in 1759. The gilt frame is the original with some overpaint. The whole is an interesting and decorative Georgian work. C.1820.
