Coastal landscape oil painting by Clive Browne 1901-1990

Coastal landscape oil painting by Clive Browne 1901-1990

£450.00

A fine oil on canvas coastal scene by the artist Clive Browne 1901-1990. An excellent example of this artist’s work and certainly an exhibited piece. The scene depicts a working coastal landscape, almost certainly in Lincolnshire. It is low light, with ships heading out from the coast, golden light creeps across the land with rolling cloud above and creeping rain clouds entering the top of the painting. The work is typically signed Clive Browne to the lower right. Clive Richard Browne (1901–1991) was a painter of landscapes in oil, and teacher of art, born in Keelby, Lincolnshire, he attended St John’s College, York. He studied at Grimsby Art School and under Herbert Rollett. Browne was a member of North Lincolnshire Art Society and of Lincolnshire Artists’ Society, also exhibiting at The Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at The Paris Salon. His main works included On the Cornish Coast, Still Grinding and Near Lizard Point. The Usher Gallery, Lincoln, holds his work. For many years Browne lived at Waltham, Lincolnshire, then latterly at Horsforth, Yorkshire. This work is a large and particularly fine example of Browne’s work; it is in good condition with one small hole repaired. The painting retains the original painted frame which is of wonderful quality and in excellent condition and probably by the famous makers James Bourlet and Sons. C.1940.
