A fine and unusual Victorian period map sampler of Europe. The sampler is worked in silks on linen with a large border of trailing vines. There is a central floral cartouche with some wonderful details: ‘Mary Shakespeare, British School, Banbury. Aged 13 years. 1855’. The map is very detailed, particularly interesting is the inclusion of Iceland and Greenland. The sampler is in very good condition, slightly faded (staining to lower left) but with no holes or losses. The work is mounted in the original frame and is ready to hang.
