A fantastic oil on canvas dating to the late eighteenth century. The work is taken after the painting ‘Lavinia, the milkmaid’ by Gainsborough, painted in 1786 and this example would have been painted shortly after. It was not unusual in the period for artists to be asked to make copies of famous works, this is a particularly good example. The painting is in excellent condition having been sympathetically, professionally cleaned and that is all. The frame is the original and is in good country house condition having a few old repairs. The whole is the most lovely example of late eighteenth century painting and in wonderful untouched condition. The work is hugely decorative and would enhance an period interior. C.1790.
