Superb Georgian Oil Painting ‘Lavinia’ After Gainsborough
Make an enquiry about this item
A fantastic oil on canvas dating to the late eighteenth century. The work is taken after the painting ‘Lavinia, the milkmaid’ by Gainsborough, painted in 1786 and this example would have been painted shortly after. The painting centres around a beautiful country maid holding a bowl of milk standing in a typical rural idyl landscape. It was not unusual in the period for artists to be asked to make copies of famous works and this is a particularly good example. The painting is in excellent condition having been sympathetically and professionally cleaned. The frame is the original and is in good country house condition having a few old repairs. The whole is a wonderful example of late eighteenth century painting and in amazing untouched condition. The work is hugely decorative and would enhance any period interior giving the perfect English country house look. C.1790.
