A fine pair of oils on tin depicting figures at windows after the Dutch Golden Age painter Gerrit Dou. The pair show figures looking towards each other, the man plays a violin and the lady appears to be trying on earrings. There was a whole genre of household scenes at windows during the seventeenth century in Holland and these most closely resemble the work of Gerrit Dou. There was a great revival of interest in these works in the nineteenth century and tourist copies were widely produced particularly in Germany of which these are an example. The pair are in excellent condition and of good quality, they are also numbered on the reverse. The pair are in the original English gilt frames which have the original gilding and are in very good condition with some minor old repairs. A good quality and very decorative pair of paintings that are ready to hang. C.1860.
