Product Description
A fine oil on canvas painting by Frederick Foottit. The painting shows a typically Victorian rural scene with a family stopping to feed their donkey on a country lane. The quality of work is lovely and I particularly like the trees which are beautifully captured. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The work is signed and dated to the lower left: ‘F.Foottit 76’ and on the reverse of the canvas there is also a title some of which is obscured. Frederick Foottit is recorded from c.1851 to 1935 with the majority of his work coming in the 1870’s. He was a landscape painter and lithographer born in Yorkshire and living in Derbyshire and London, he was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1901 where he exhibited an amazing 145 works. He exhibited widely and profusely at all the major galleries of the period including the Royal Academy.
The painting retains the original frame which has been later over-gilded and had some old repair.
The whole is a lovely example of Victorian rural genre painting and is in ready to hang condition.
Overall sizes in inches, including frame: 25 1/2 by 19 1/2
