Late Georgian heraldic crest

A fine and original late Georgian heraldic crest oil painting on oak panel. The work is typical of the type, painted on a black background with thick varnish. It is often stated that these panels were hung from coach doors but I think this example was only for decorative purposes. The detail of the work is superb and it is in very good untouched condition. The shield is surmounted by a family crest of a black griffin grasping a crown, although being black it does fade into the background somewhat. The panel is mounted in the original untouched gilt frame which is in excellent condition with only some minor areas of old repair. A great example of its type and ready to hang. C.1820
