A large, decorative and impressive oil on canvas painting of dogs by J.Clarke dated 1885. The painting shows two working dogs resting in a landscape setting. The painting has a slight early naive charm about it that would work wonderfully in a period country house setting. The artist has been difficult to assign as there are many J.Clarke’s listed, it is possibly one of these, or a provincial animal portraitist working commercially rather than exhibiting. The painting has had some repair, it has been lined some time ago, and it has been professionally cleaned, but not over restored. The frame is probably the original and has been regilded at some point. The painting is a great large decorative work with a wonderful look and would really give a room great impact and a period feel.
