Italian Riviera scene oil painting by Godwin Bennett
A fine oil on canvas depicting the Italian Riviera village of Portofino, by Godwin Bennett (1888-1960). The painting is worked in wonderful thick impasto oils with a great confidence and ability in an impressionist manner including great detail in the figures and the busy shore. The painting is signed to the lower left. Godwin Bennett was an art dealer and self taught artist painting scenes of towns in the West Country and Southern England, originally hailing from Brighton. This work is quite unusual as it must have been painted on a Summer holiday in Italy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy towards the end of his career in the 1950’s. His work is often seen as postcards. The painting is in excellent condition and is framed in the original white painted frame. The whole has a great decorative appeal with a feel of the Art Deco and the Riviera style. C.1930
