Italian city at nightfall, oil painting
A very interesting and decorative oil on canvas scene of an Italian city at nightfall. The painting is most likely taken or inspired from much earlier Italian painting as the figures have an early look to them. The scene shows an Italian piazza with a triumphal arch and some boats in the distance, it is possibly Venice. The painting is very dark with just areas of the very last of the sunlight cast over the rooftops. The work is signed on the reverse but I have been unable to identify the artist. The work is framed in a Victorian period gilt frame which has had some repair. The whole has a great early look and is ready to hang. C.1890.
