A fine Victorian oil on canvas marine scene. The view is of a dramatic wreck after a storm. The painting is scene to the lower left: ‘C.W.Wake’ the artist does not appear to be recorded and it is probable the work is by the highly regarded marine painter John Cheltenham Wake (1837-1882) as the signature looks to be the same hand and the style of work is very similar, and the signature could be read as ‘C. Wake’. The painting has been professionally cleaned and a hole repaired in the grey sky to the top left. The painting is in good condition with some areas of light craquelure the whole having a country house antique look. The work is in the original fine quality gilt frame with original gilding, it does have some old areas of minor repair and overall is in good untouched condition. The whole has a great period look and is a wonderful piece of Victorian marine art which is ready to hang. C.1860.
