Product Description
A fine pair of oils on artist board depicting Venus weighing love and friendship. The pair show Venus as different beautiful ladies each with cupid and scales. In one Venus weighs love, represented by Cupid, against a butterfly and love is lighter. In the second Venus with Cupid weigh friendship, represented by clasped hands, against a feather and friendship is lighter. I suppose the moral is that both love and friendship are light and delicate and must be look after. The quality of the paintings is fantastic but they do not appear to be signed. They are painted on Roberson artist board which dates them to C.1850 and indicates they would be by a professional artist’s hand. The paintings have both been professionally, lightly, cleaned and are in excellent condition. The pair are framed in late Victorian frames and must have been re-framed at this time. The frames and mounts are in good condition, slightly faded and darkened as would be expected for the age. The pair are extremely decorative and of a really top level quality for the period.
Overall sizes in inches, including frame, each: 13 by 13
