Rare pair of Georgian prints relating to Tipu Sultan
Rare pair of Georgian prints relating to Tipu Sultan
£1,250.00
A very rare pair of Georgian prints relating the British in India and Tipu Sultan. The pair of prints are in very good condition with the odd typical mark. The pair are beautifully coloured and these colours are remarkably fresh and bright. The prints were published in London in 1796 by Haines and Son. The pair are titled: ‘Marquiss Cornwallis receiving the sons of Tippoo Saib’ and ‘Return of Tippoo Saib’s two sons to their mother’. The prints refer to a particular period in the British expansion in India and the Anglo-Mysore wars where Tipu Sultan fought the British over the Sultanate of Mysore. The defeat of Tipu Sultan meant he handed over his sons to the British until he had met their terms of surrender. The pair are extremely rare period prints of this important part of history and are so unusual to still be together. The simple bird’s eye maple frames are also the original and in very good untouched condition.
Overall sizes in inches including frames: 12 ½ by 16 ½
