A fine and unusual Georgian silk on silk needlework of a green parrot. The piece is in excellent condition with the colours bright and true. The quality of the work is superb with a beautiful detailed fine stitch. The needlework is framed in the original gilt oval frame. The piece retains a label on the reverse that talks about the maker:
Embroidery worked by Susannah Cleveland. Susannah Cleveland was the daughter of Mr. Sayer. Bathing rooms proprietor. High Street. Margate. She married John Cleveland and on her parents’ death, with her husband, carried on the bathing rooms. She had two sons, John born 1814 and George Augustine Stewart Cleveland born 1815. Great Grandmother of Kerbey and George Cleveland.
The whole is a fine and unusual piece in good condition. C.1810.
