Lamplight oil painting by Sylvia Levine
Lamplight oil painting by Sylvia Levine
£225.00
A very interesting oil on board depicting a snowy street under lamplight by Sylvia Levine 1911-1998. The work is typical of the artist having a naïve style, a use of thick impasto paint and the scene being observed from an oblique angle. The painting is in good untouched condition and is signed and dated to the lower right, Sylvia Levine 1958. Sylvia Levine only began painting in in 1956 so this represents a very early work. She was mainly self-taught having had some lessons but choosing to go her own way, she worked mainly with a palette knife on card and board. She lived in Bristol and I suspect this painting is a view from her window. She exhibited widely including at The Royal Academy, the Carl Hammer Gallery in Chicago and the Museum of American Folk Art in New York. This work retains the label on the reverse for the Society of Women Artists where it was exhibited. The painting retains the original typically simple wood frame. The whole is a lovely example of this interesting artist’s work.
Overall sizes in inches including frame: 13 ¼ by 15 ½
