Horse oil painting of Dandy by John Atkinson 1863-1924
Horse oil painting of Dandy by John Atkinson 1863-1924
£950.00
A fine oil on canvas depicting the horse Dandy by John Atkinson 1863-1924. The horse is beautifully painted in a stable setting in an almost impressionist manner with a use of thick impasto paint applied with broad confident brushstrokes. The work is fully signed and dated 1909 to the lower left. John Atkinson 1863-1924 is most famous for his animal paintings, particularly of horses. He was born in Newcastle and trained at the Newcastle College of Art under Wilson Hepple. He became a professional artist in 1901 after moving to Whitby. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and the Staithes Art Club, although he did not join until its final year of existence. This work is an excellent example of the ability of Atkinson and must have been a commissioned piece by the owner of the horse. The painting is in excellent condition having been professionally cleaned. The work is mounted in a vintage frame that works very well with the whole and which it has been in for some time. The painting has a great decorative country look and is ready to hang.
