Garden Scene oil painting by Graham Petrie 1859-1940

£495.00

A fine oil on paper by the artist Graham Petrie 1859-1940, depicting a garden scene. The work is beautifully free in technique with large blocks of colour, well controlled, to bring the plants and flowers of the garden to life. The work is composed superbly around a bold use of bright colours for the plants and columns, set against the use of black shadow in the background. Graham Petrie (1859–1940), was a British artist, poster designer, and author. He was well known for his landscape and travel posters for railway companies. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (elected 1903) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (elected 1920). He was born in St Pancras, London in 1859. He originally trained as an architect, educated at Mill Hill, then studied painting in London under Professor Fred Brown, and then later also in Paris. He exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Fine Art Society, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and with the British Society of Poster Designers. He exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition between 1893 and 1930. This painting is an excellent example of the work of Petrie, is in very good original condition and signed to the lower right. The work is mounted in the original gilt frame which has a stylish uncut wood finish. The reverse retains a fragmentary label indicating the work was probably exhibited. The whole is a great decorative painting by an interesting artist and is ready to hang. C.1900.
