Autumn oil painting by Alexander Coutts Fraser
Autumn oil painting by Alexander Coutts Fraser
£795.00
A superb oil on canvas titled Autumn by the Scottish artist Alexander Coutts Fraser (1868-1939). The painting beautifully depicts a shepherd, with his dog, driving his sheep down a lane early on an Autumn morning. The technique is very interesting using thick impasto oil paints to create a very detailed depiction. The work is signed to the front ‘Alec Fraser’ and the painting is in excellent untouched condition. Alexander ‘Alec’ Coutts Fraser was a painter and printmaker born in Aberdeen. He was one of the first students to study at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and later held the post of Head during the period 1914-34. Fraser travelled in France and elsewhere in Europe from the 1890s until the First World War. A prolific etcher, he also made posters, some of which were for the Great Western Railway. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, and The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and examples of his work are in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery, Robert Gordon University, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. This painting is an excellent example of his landscape work. The gilt frame is the original and in unbelievably good untouched condition. The frame retains the makers label on the reverse for John Kesson of Aberdeen a maker of the highest quality. The whole is a superb example of Scottish art and in the best original condition. C.1900.
