An interesting, unusual and decorative oil on canvas by Laura Sumner depicting a landscape at sunset or sunrise at Raquette Lake, New York State. The painting is confidently and beautifully worked in an impressionist manner, capturing the light and colours of the time of day wonderfully. The work is in good condition and has been professionally cleaned. The frame is the original with the original gilding. It has a very American Arts and Crafts design and is very unusual. The reverse retains a label which list the location, artist and date of the work, which is 1924, and there is also an exhibition label. Little is known about the artist Laura W Y Sumner she lived in New York and Connecticut and did exhibit at The Greenwich Society of Artists which was influential in the American Impressionist movement. It is likely that the exhibition label on the reverse refers to The Greenwich Society of Artists. The whole is a most interesting and decorative work with a great American historical background and it is ready to hang.
